Managing the Complexity of IoT Integration
As the industrial IoT gains traction across the manufacturing industry, some companies - especially those with substantial legacy systems - are discovering how resource-intensive the integration of hardware devices, components, and back-end systems can be. But early adopters are figuring better ways to manage the integration piece. What is the role of APIs in IoT integration and what steps can companies take to embrace an API-first approach? How can the cloud be employed to ease the integration of data and workflow processes? And what are some of the best practices that have been identified for managing the integration piece of an IoT implementation?

IoT Interoperability Challenges
The entire premise of the IoT is that devices, systems, platforms and networks communicate among themselves seamlessly, in other words they need to have interoperability. Yet today it’s the Wild West--there are literally hundreds of IoT platforms with individual protocols, interfaces and formats that are anything but compatible. Yet, that’s not stopping successful early adopters from moving ahead.
  • What are the state-of-the-art enabling technologies and solutions available today to address interoperability?
  • What are the lessons from IoT early adopters on coping with compatibility issues?
  • When can the industry expect standards to be established for ensuring the interoperability among IoT platforms, devices, and networks, and what can they do in the absence of them?

Building Secure IIoT Systems
In study after study, industrial manufacturers cite security and data privacy issues as two concerns impacting faster adoption of the IoT. Little wonder, with concerns over new cyberthreats to data and systems previously captive to the factory floor. With no-one-size fits all, companies today are pursuing a range of strategies to secure their systems and data streams.
  • What steps should a company take to identify their security needs for an industrial IoT implementation?
  • What are the issues with taking an ad hoc approach to industrial IoT security?
  • And what are the pros and cons of internally developed security solutions vs. third party solutions?

5G is Here and It's Coming to Your Factory Floor
With a major rollout of 5G networks coming this year, enterprises are likely to be among the first to take advantage of the capabilities. The improvements in speed, latency, and capacity, as well as 5G’s ability to support edge analytics, are expected to significantly accelerate Industrial IoT implementations and create the potential for new revenue streams.
  • How will 5G transform the Industrial IoT?
  • What will be some of the first use cases for 5G in the Industrial IoT?
  • But wait, what about Wi-Fi 6?

IoT Infrastructure: Getting it Right
The Industrial IoT infrastructure is made up of four basic elements: sensors/devices, network connectivity, data processing, user interface. And many systems employ an industrial IoT platform, an integrated system to bring devices online and securely manage them. But despite the relative simplicity, there are numerous considerations in the evaluation and selection of the individual components in order to design a system that works optimally.
  • The reality is that most manufacturers are dealing with legacy components, how does that factor into the design of the infrastructure?
  • What are some of the best practices for developing IIoT system requirements?
  • And what are the considerations in selecting an IIoT platform?
